A Boston neighborhood · Massachusetts

Overview

Welcome to
Charlestown.

Charlestown is Boston's oldest neighborhood, and it wears that history on every block: the Bunker Hill Monument rising over gaslit streets of Federal-era rowhouses, the Freedom Trail crossing the bridge from the North End, and the Navy Yard — home of the USS Constitution — anchoring a waterfront that has traded warships for condos with skyline views. The Training Field and Monument Square hold some of the most photographed housing stock in the city.

The market splits between historic rowhouses on the hill and modern waterfront condos in and around the Navy Yard, with the ferry from Pier 4 to Long Wharf making the commute downtown a ten-minute boat ride. The Orange Line at Community College and Sullivan Square covers the landward side, and the North Washington Street bridge puts the North End within walking distance. Charlestown is Boston with three centuries of character — for the citywide picture, see our Boston page.
